A record of more than 8.3 million people visited Bruges &#8211; a city of less than 120,000 residents &#8211; in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Now, locals have had enough<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople have started indicating that there are just too many visitors,\u201d Bruges Mayor Dirk De fauw told The Brussels Times in August. \u201cIf we just let everyone do what they want, things will quickly go wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As part of the solution, the city has implemented a ban on the construction of new hotels in its historic centre. It has also stopped issuing new\u00a0<strong>holiday home<\/strong>\u00a0permits across the entire city.<\/p>\n<h2>Why is Bruges cracking down on short-term holiday rentals?<\/h2>\n<p>Although Bruges\u2019s plans aren\u2019t as extreme as those of\u00a0<strong>Barcelona<\/strong>, which earlier this summer announced a citywide ban on short-term rentals by 2029, they are a step towards controlling overtourism.<\/p>\n<p>It is hoped the new restrictions will help to restore balance between tourists and residents in the beautiful\/charming but crowded city.<\/p>\n<p>However, some experts point out that a crackdown on\u00a0<strong>Airbnb-style<\/strong>\u00a0accommodation won\u2019t solve the city\u2019s day-tripper problem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBruges, much like Venice, is a city closely tied to its harbour, attracting a large number of day-trippers,\u201d says Bart-Jan Leyts, founder and CEO of property ranking platform Otamiser, who grew up in the city.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bruges is combatting tourist overcrowding with an Airbnb crackdown and cruise ship caps.
