The 81st edition of the\u00a0Venice Film Festival<\/strong>\u00a0has come to a close, and after 11 vibrant and humid days, this year\u2019s Competition jury led by Isabelle Huppert has awarded the coveted Best Film Golden Lion to Pedro Almod\u00f3var and his film\u00a0The Room Next Door<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n

The film succeeds last year\u2019s Yorgos Lanthimos\u2019\u00a0Poor Things,<\/em>\u00a0and was a favourite amongst the 21 films in Competition this year on the Lido.<\/p>\n

The Room Next Door<\/em>\u00a0is the celebrated Spanish director\u2019s 23rd film but his first full-length project in English. Based on Sigrid Nunez\u2019s novel “What Are You Going Through”, it follows two friends (Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton) who rekindle their friendship. It turns out that one of them has been diagnosed with terminal cervical cancer. After reconnecting with her friend, she asks for a favour… And a big one at that: to be in the titular next room when she takes a euthanasia pill and ends her life with dignity.<\/p>\n

Almod\u00f3var dedicated the Golden Lion to his two stars and stated that the prize belonged to them. He previously called for\u00a0greater access to euthanasia worldwide<\/strong>, and stated during the press conference: \u201cWe have a law in Spain on euthanasia. It should be possible to have all over the world. It should be regulated and the doctor should be allowed to help his patient.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis movie is in favour of euthanasia,\u201d continued the director, and adding while accepting his prize that the film isn\u2019t political but humanist.<\/p>\n

As of 2024, euthanasia is legal in only four countries in Europe: Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Spain \u2013 with the law in Portugal yet in force and awaiting regulation.<\/p>\n

The Room Next Door<\/em>\u00a0is Almod\u00f3var\u2019s follow-up to 2021\u2019s\u00a0Parallel Mothers<\/em>, which also premiered at the Venice Film Festival and won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress for Pen\u00e9lope Cruz.\u00a0The director previously received the festival\u2019s lifetime achievement award in 2019.<\/p>\n

Considering Venice has a proven track record for premiering future Oscar contenders (since 2014, they\u2019ve hosted four best picture winners –\u00a0Birdman<\/em>,\u00a0Spotlight<\/em>,\u00a0The Shape of Water<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Nomadland<\/em>\u00a0– and 19 nominees), you can expect\u00a0The Room Next Door<\/em>\u00a0to be an early frontrunner for next year\u2019s Oscars – alongside\u00a0several other winners, including The Brutalist.<\/p>\n
